There will be some things that I’ll be more aware of…like a little house hidden behind the trees that was previously unseen. But unfortunately, riding in the street at a faster speed and having to be so aware of traffic will prevent noticing the little things. Things to notice on a bike: “I think I can make that light if I sprint, but is that person on the phone going to look at me? Is that car door opening? If I can’t make the light, can I sneak the wrong way down the one-way street and go around the light? Whoa, pot hole!” I still love the bike though. Wind in your face, the smells, and you can still interact with people!

Wow! I think the varying levels of noticing are interesting. In a car, you’re sort of fully removed from seeing small details. On a bike, you can pick up things like smells and the sensation of wind and such. Walking, well, there’s even more to see and it’s much easier to stop for the details!

Do you think that shift you noticed will change the way you bike to work (when you do bike to work)?

Due to the freezing cold, I recently took a break from bicycle commuting and just started walking. It was so relaxing not having to worry about traffic, and like you say, I started seeing all sorts of things I missed on the bike. I plan to add a lot more walking into the routine in 2012.
